GRAVETT, Ellis T. - Ellis T. Gravett, known as "the father of Gravette," our town which bears his name, died Thursday, Jan. 19, 1917 at his home in Garfield, Ark. aged 73 years. Mr. Gravett was born in Clark Co., Kentucky, near Winchester, March 1844; was married to Miss Nannie Moore in 1865; to this union two sons were born, Ed M. Gravett of this city and Arthur, the first born who died when young. Mr. Gravett again married in 1876 Miss Laura Bullock, who survives. To this union were born 8 children: Rudolph, Florence, Maude, Bulah, Goldie, Bill, Earl and Keet, all of whom survive except Earl who was killed by a train last year. Mr. Gravett moved from Kentucky to Kansas in 1872 and in 1877 started on foot with a cousin to walk to New Orleans in search of health. The cousin turned back at Seneca, Mo. and Mr. Gravett landed in Maysville. He taught school here a few years, regained his health and established a store in Oldtown in 1884. He acquired 120 acres here where Gravette now stands and in 1893 the K.C., Pittsburg & Gulf Ry. {now K.C.S.} came thru here, across Mr. Gravett's farm and the same became the townsite. Mr. Gravett profited well from this; yet did more for others, financially and otherwise, than for himself, while the town and country were building. The News Herald man, struggling for a start over 20 years ago, testifies to Mr. Gravett's charitable and kindly consideration, such as he extended many along that line. Mr. Gravett later located at Amsterdam, Mo., then on the White river, at Centerton, Highfill and then at Garfield where he died. A host of people regret the passing of "the father of our town," and sympathize with the relatives in their loss.
