FIRST LIEUTENANT US Air Force
1916-1943

From the Wynne Progress 18 February 1943:
"lst Lieutenant James W. Campbell, son of Will A. and Stella D. Campbell was instantly killed in a plane crash when two pursuit ships collided in midair at Knoxville, Tennessee. He was to have been married to Miss Patty Carpenter of Denver , Colorado. James was a star football player for Parkin High School and went to Centenary College, Sheveport, Louisana. When he was at Centenary he was a star tackle and center, Captain of Centenary Gentlemen, and his senior year was a honor graduate. James received his lst Lieutenant commission at Luke Field, Arizona."
James is buried in Cogbill Cemetery and his headstone reads, "flying a new ship."
