Russell J. Seay, 88, of Springdale died Sunday, Feb. 18, 2007, at Northwest Medical Center-Springdale. He was born March 31, 1918, in Dutch Mills to Jarva Seay and Nora White Seay.

He graduated from high school in Morrow. He was drafted in World War II, serving as a staff sergeant with the infantry for three years, eight months in the Pacific Theater. For his brave service, he was awarded four Bronze Stars, Purple Heart, a Combat Infantry Badge, a Philippine Liberation Ribbon, the American Defense Service Ribbon, an AP Service Ribbon and a Good Conduct Medal. After being discharged, he became a brick mason and founded Seay Masonry Contracting.

He was united in marriage to Gwendolyn Vivian Allen, on July 14, 1946. To this union four children were born, Allen Russell, Laura Lynn, Tommy Lowell and Leslie Layne.

He was a longtime member of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Fayetteville, where he served as a deacon for many years. He was also a member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart. He loved spending time with his family, working in his garden and traveling around the United States. One of his greatest joys was visiting the farm south of Lincoln where he spent his boyhood.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Bobby Seay and Joe Seay and his sisters, Alma Umberson and Cleo Reed.

Survivors include his wife, Gwendolyn; two sons, Allen Seay and wife Tresha Jackey of Woodinville, Wash., and Tommy Seay of Winslow; two daughters, Laura Lynn Chitwood and husband Carol Dean of St. Clair, Mo., and Leslie Wetherbee and husband Lowell of Bentonville; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today, Feb. 21 at Sisco Chapel in Springdale.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Fayetteville with Pastor Paul Sagan officiating. Burial will be in Cave Springs Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Covenant Presbyterian Church, 4511 W. Wedington Drive, Fayetteville, 72704.
