At the age of seven in Terrell, Arkansas Gerald had walked to the grocery store, down the road ( highway)from their house to get some thing for his Mother. He got a ride with a man in a pick-up truck on the way back. He had hopped in back of the pickup, and when the truck stopped to let him out, He had to cross the highway to get to the house. He ran in front of a oncoming car.
