John James Thomas was born in Chester County, South Carolina, his family later moving to Bradley County, Arkansas. On April 13, 1862 he enlisted in Griffith's Arkansas Regiment in Little Rock, Arkansas. He served during the seige of Port Hudson, Mississippi and was captured there on July 7, 1863. He was taken to the Federal prison Point Lookout, Maryland on March 21, 1865. He died one week later at the age of nineteen.
