John L. Summit was born and raised in the Ouachita Township of Montgomery County, Arkansas. He was the son of Jacob and Rosetta Summit according to the 1900 census. John was first married to Gladys Mabry. In 1928, he married Mae Thompson. He had registered for the World War I draft in 1917 and was still single at that time. At some point he moved and worked in California where his Social Security card was issued before 1951, but he lived in Bluffton, Yell County, Arkansas at the time of his 1970 death.
