DRUMMOND, Elmer Lester - Elmer Lester Drummond was born near Ohiowa, Neb. Dec. 23, 1888; died June 3, 1916. He moved with his parents at an early age near Rogers, where he grew to manhood. He was married to Miss Inez Lyons of Amsterdam, Mo. last August. To this union a sweet little baby girl was born May 20th, 1916. Elmer was a true type of perfect manhood and a born machinist. Wherever he worked he was loved and cherished as a brother or son. His devotion to his aged mother and his girl wife, who he loved better than life, is proof of his noble character. He always greeted his friends and loved ones with a smile. Few boys can leave behind a better showing than Elmer did. He joined the First M.E. church when but a boy and has often made the remark that he wanted to live each day so that when the summons came all would be well and those who knew him best know that today he is singing God's praises with the angels. He never had an enemy of his own making; if he had one it was their own fault. He leaves, besides his young wife and baby, an aged mother, one brother, who he idolized, and five sisters to mourn his departure, his father having preceded him to the better land a year ago. {A card of thanks was published, signed by Mrs. F.A. Elmer Drummond, who lived in the Little Flock neighborhood, northwest of Rogers, was struck by a Frisco engine Saturday evening and instantly killed. The accident occurred at the Pleasant Hill crossing, three miles north of Rogers, when Mr. Drummond attempted to cross the Frisco track in an auto. Mr. Drummond, who for a time worked in one of the local garages, had been at Avoca and was returning home. He was driving the old one-cylinder Brush car, formerly owned by J.E. Latham, for which he had recently traded. He was going south and as it was just about time for the local passenger train from that direction, it is supposed he gave his entire attention to the stretch of track ahead of him and failed to glance back over his shoulder to see whether or not a train might be approaching from the north. The road, which runs parallel to the track for some distance at this point, makes a rather abrupt turn at the crossing and when Mr. Drummond swung his car to the right to cross, he was just in time to get squarely on the track when he was struck by a train from the north. It consisted of an engine and caboose and they were making good time. The little car was crushed to kindling wood and the body was hurled some seventy feet away, nearly every bone in the body being crushed. Mr. Drummond was badly crushed about the head. The engineer saw the little car speeding along the road but said he thought it was a mild attempt at racing and had no reason to anticipate that it would attempt to cross in front of the train. A farmer just below the crossing saw the auto coming and supposing it was headed for Rogers, drew out to one side to let it pass. He was astonished to see the auto turn to the right at the crossing but it was too late to give the driver any warning and he sped onward to his death. The deceased was 24 years old and a son of the late P.W. Drummond, a well known G.A.R. He was married last August and leaves a wife and baby child only two weeks old. He was a popular young fellow and had many friends both in town and in the country. His untimely death was a great blow to the wife and relatives and they have the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community. Funeral services were held at the First M.E. church Sunday at four o'clock, conducted by the pastor. Interment was in the Rogers cemetery.
