DECATUR MAN SHOOTS HIMSELF MONDAY
Despondency Said to Have Been Cause of Frank Philpot Committing Suicide
Frank Philpot, a timber worker, 27 years old, shot himself with a .32 caliber revolver Monday afternoon in his one-room log cabin in the woods ten miles north of Bentonville near the state line.
A neighbor’s daughter, hearing the shot, went to the cabin where she found him lying on the bed with his revolver beside him.
A coroner’s jury of 12 men empanelled by Ernest Hileman justice of the peace, returned a verdict of death by suicide, cause unknown. Sheriff Maples and Dr. R.M. Atkinson, county physician, were at the hearing.
The body was taken to his former home near Decatur, where funeral services conducted by Rev. W.C. Savage were held at the Falling Springs Church yesterday afternoon. Burial was made in the Falling Springs cemetery. He is survived by his wife, from whom he had separated some time ago and three little children.
Philpot was born in Mason Valley and was the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Philpot, following their death he was raised by the late Tom Pickens, living west of Decatur. Later he married the daughter of a well known farmer of Falling Springs community. He had lived near Decatur since he was 12 years old. A few months ago he obtained employment by a sawmill company north of Bentonville to cut saw logs. Philpot lived in a little log cabin in the woods on the Wilson Brown property.
Some rumors that Philpot’s death might not have been a suicide, cause several Decatur relatives and friends of his to visit the scene of the alleged suicide this morning. Sheriff Maples, who accompanied them, still believes it was a case of suicide.
