STOKES, Joel Allen - Joel Allen Stokes, who died Dec. 28, 1916 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Effie Dyer, was born Sept. 12, 1848 in Wayne Co., Ky., moved to Kansas in 1874 and later to Texas where he married Miss Josephine Beck, his sweetheart from Kentucky, Dec. 29, 1876. To this union were born three children, Effie {Mrs. Frank Dyer), Emma {Mrs. J.E. McAllister), and Elias, the only son, who was a victim of the terrible powder explosion in the K.C.S. cut at Gravette in October 1902. His death occurred just a month before the death of the mother who passed away without knowing that her son had died. Mr. Stokes also leaves two brothers, E.S. of Gravette, and S.C. of Nolen, N.M., one sister, Mrs. Emma Wilson, Marrowbone, Ky., and a host of other relatives and friends. Mr. Stokes was a teacher and farmer; and in his boyhood days he came in touch with the Ku Klux experiences. He was a good citizen and loved justice; a member of the old school Cumberland Presbyterian church, also was a Mason. Following the funeral, conducted by Rev. W.D. Parrish, the body was laid to rest in the I.O.O.F. cemetery. Sympathy is extended the bereaved relatives.
