JEFFERSON, Joann NEAL - Died at the family residence 2 miles east of Bentonville, Nov. 26, 1904, Mrs. Joann Jefferson, wife of S.A. Jefferson, age 65 years, 1 month and 2 days. The deceased was born in Boone county, Mo. Oct. 24, 1839. Moved to Washington County, Ark. with her parents, Daniel and Mary Neal, in the 16th year of her age. She professed religion in her girlhood and united with the M.E. Church, South. Eighteen years ago she united with the Wood's congregation of the C.P. Church which relationship she sustained acceptably until death. Feb. 5th, 1862 she was married to S.A. Jefferson. To them were born eleven children, five sons and six daughters. Of these three sons and six daughters are living and were present when the end came, two sons having died in infancy and childhood. Her life was truly a home life, tenderly and unweariedly devoted to the happiness and well-being of the family. Seldom, only when sickness in the homes of her children or her neighbors, or when public duties and services required it, was she seen away from the home circle. For quite a while before her death she was a great sufferer and knew that she could not recover, still she bore her sufferings with fortitude and patience, perfectly resigned to her condition and calmly waiting the end. A large concourse of friends and acquaintances attended the funeral service at the house, thus manifesting their respect and condolence. The remains were laid at rest in the family burying ground near the home to await the command of Him who is the resurrection and the life. P. Carnahan, Pastor.

JEFFERSON, Samuel Allen - Died March 11th, 1908 at his residence two miles east of Bentonville, Samuel Allen Jefferson, in the 71st year of his age. Deceased was born near Fayetteville, Washington Co., Ark. Jan. 1838. When three years of age his parents moved from Washington to Benton county to the farm owned in part by the deceased at the time of his death. He was one of the oldest residents of this community and of this county. Here his childhood, boyhood, manhood and declining years were spent. Here he received his education, which, from want of opportunity, was necessarily limited. February 5, 1862 he was married to Miss Joan Neal of Washington county. To them were born eleven children, Bartlett A., Mrs. C.C. Huffman, Wm. Thomas, Mrs. Alice Woods, Mrs. Gresham, Misses Mollie, May and Pearl, Charles, George (deceased), Pierce (deceased). Mrs. Jefferson died Nov. 26, 1904. The surviving children were all present during his last illness to nurse and comfort, except Charles, who was in Texas and failed unavoidably to arrive until after the funeral. Deceased was devoted to his home and family and amply provided for their comfort and necessities. In the war between the states he cast his lot with the South and was a brave and active soldier. He was in the battles of Oak Hill, Pea Ridge, Prairie Grove, Mansfield and Poison Springs. At the battle of Oak Hill he was severely wounded in the left thigh and was a cripple for many months. He served four years in the army and surrendered to General Cyrus Bussy at Fort Smith, Ark. June 1865. He was a good citizen, a kind and accommodating neighbor, a devoted husband and an affectionate father. He was not a member of the church yet we may rest assured that all that infinite love and mercy, coupled with infinite justice and righteousness could do for his well being, was done. A large congregation of kindred, neighbors and friends from the community and from the city attended his funeral, manifesting alike their sympathy for the bereft family. The remains were neatly and tenderly laid to rest in the family burying ground near the residence. Thus another of the old land marks has been blotted out. P. Carnahan.
