GILBERT HICKS- 1807-1881 BORN IN NO CAROLINA. MARRIED ELIZABETH ALLEN APRIL 2, 1820 IN MAURY CO, TENN. SON OF LITTLEBERRY AND AGNES JORDAN HICKS. AFTER LEAVING TENNESSEE, GILBERT AND FAMILY SETTLED AT MARS HILL, ARKANSAS. EVENTALLY, HE MOVED TO THE PALESTINE COMMUNITY, WHERE HE PURCHASED LAND AND BEGAN FARMING. HE WAS ALSO A WAGON MAKER. IN 1859, HE BUILT A TWO STORY BUILDING CALLED "THE INSTITUTE" THAT WAS USED FOR CHURCH SERVICES, A COMMUNITY HALL AND THE MASONIC TEMPLE. GILBERT WAS A MASTER MASON AND ESTABLISHED THE MASONIC LODGE 109 ON NOVEMBER 28, 1859. GILBERT WAS ALSO THE FOUNDER OF THE PALESTINE CEMETERY. IN THE 1950'S, A MAN NAMED JONES DONATED MORE LAND TO THE CEMETERY, THUS BECOMING PALESTINE-JONES CEMETERY.
