Ruth Allison Steinsiek, 93, of Jonesboro died Tuesday, June 1, at St. Bernard's Medical Center.

Born at the Strangers Home community near Alicia, she was a lifelong educator and a member of First United Methodist Church of Jonesboro.

She earned a bachelor's degree in elocution and primary education from Jonesboro Baptist College and a master's degree in education from what was then Arkansas State College.

She was the first pre-school teacher in Lawrence County and taught for Lawrence County public schools before teaching at the Demonstration School at ASC.

A teacher at East Elementary in Jonesboro, she opened and served as director for the first Head Start center in Northeast Arkansas and later served as regional assistant training officer for Head Start at Arkansas State University before serving as director of childhood services there.

She served as a consultant to ASU Childhood Services until 2001 and helped establish the Epsilon Delta chapter of Phi Mu fraternity at ASU.

She received numerous honors over the years, including the Governor's Award for Service to Young Children in Arkansas, Friends of Children Award and the Arkansas Early Childhood Outstanding Professional Award.

She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Pi Gamma Mu, Kappa Delta Pi and Phi Delta Kappa.

Survivors include two daughters, Betty Shaw of Jonesboro and Sally Blake of El Paso, Texas; 10 grandchildren, Bill Steinsiek, Scott Steinsiek, Doug Steinsiek, Susan Steinsiek Davis, Misty Shaw Velasquez, Chris Snipes, Jonathan Snipes, Straley Snipes Owen, Storey Snipes Williams and Candice Blake Burkett; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Doyne Jackson Steinsiek; one daughter, Kay Allison Steinsiek Snipes; one stepson, Bill Steinsiek; her parents, Robert E. Lee and Mollie Allison; three brothers; and one sister.
