February 21, 1923 - May 23, 1994

Alton Baldwin was born February 21, 1923, in Hot Springs, Arkansas, the son (and only child) of John A. Baldwin and Polly Holmes Baldwin.

Baldwin attended Jones School, Hot Springs Junior High and Hot Springs High School, graduating with the Class of 1943. While attending the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Baldwin lettered four years in football and three years in track. He batted over .400 for two consecutive summers in semi-pro baseball and played AAA ball in the St Louis Cardinals organization in 1947. He was an All-Southwest Conference defensive end with the 1946 Razorback team that played in the Cotton Bowl in 1947. He was named Most Valuable Player in the 0-0 tie with Louisiana State University in the 1947 Cotton Bowl. He held the record (as of 1987) for the most touchdowns scored by pass receiving in a single game and the longest pass completion.

After graduating from the University of Arkansas, he was drafted by the Buffalo Bills and was All-Pro in 1948-1949. He played for the Green Bay Packers and finished his professional career as player/coach for the Ottawa Rough Riders in the Canadian Football League. He was named to the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame in 1987.
