BEARD, John Marshall - J.M. Beard, a former representative of Benton county and a resident of this county for 62 years, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. E.T. Pinkston, in Rogers early Sunday morning following an illness of several weeks. He was 77 years of age. Funeral services were held at the Pinkston home Monday, the Rev. Floyd Tillman conducting the services. Interment was made in the Goad cemetery west of Lowell. J. Marshall Beard was born in Marshall county, Tenn. January 18, 1851 and was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Cy Beard who came to Benton county in 1866 and took up a homestead west of Lowell. In 1870 he married Miss Lucinda Hamby, daughter of a prominent family of that neighborhood. She died about three months ago. Six children survive their parents: Mrs. E.T. Pinkston, Rogers; Jasper Beard, Lowell; Dr. J.M. Beard, Seminole, Okla.; Mrs. Adena Henry, Joplin and Leroy Beard in Southwest Arkansas (only five named). Mr. Beard was widely known in Benton county and served two terms in the Arkansas legislature. He was a prominent Baptist and one of the leaders in the Benton county singing convention. He farmed for several years in Lowell. Mr. Beard retired in 1912 and made Rogers his home.

J.M. Beard, one of the most widely-known citizens of this section, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. E.T. Pinkston, Sunday morning after an illness of several weeks. Mr. Beard was 77 years old, a native of Marshall county, Tennessee. He was reared as a youth in Texas and came to Benton county 60 years ago. He was married to Miss Lucinda Hamby, daughter of another pioneer of the county, near Lowell, who died February 27th of this year. To them were born six children: Dr. J.M. Beard of Seminole, Okla.; Mrs. E.T. Pinkston, Rogers, Ark.; Dr. David A. Beard, Tulsa, Okla.; Jasper Beard, Lowell, Ark.; Leroy of Southern Arkansas and Mrs. Adena Henry of Joplin, Mo. All but one of the children were here for the funeral service which was held Monday at Goad's Springs near Lowell. Reverend Floyd Tillman, a former pastor of the Baptist church of Lowell, preached the sermon. Mr. Beard was engaged in the mercantile business with his son, J.M. Beard for many years at Lowell, south of Rogers, retiring in 1912 when he moved to Rogers. He was elected to the state legislature in 1913 and again in 1919. He was an advocate of the Alexander road law and worked consistently for the building of roads in Arkansas. He was a life long member of the Baptist church and a teacher of music by the old time method known as the "four square" music. Until recent illness prevented Mr. Beard was present at all community singing, using the old song books and preceding the song by the "do-re-mi" drill. Besides his own children he reared a grandson, Marshall Beard of Joplin, Mo. and there are three other grandchildren, Aubrey, Opal and Roland Pinkston, all of Dallas, Texas.

John Marshall Beard, age 77 years, four months and one day, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. E.T. Pinkston, on South Fourth street at midnight Saturday night. Mr. Beard had been in a serious condition for some time and his death was not unexpected. Funeral services were held from the home at eleven o'clock this morning with interment in Goad Springs Cemetery. J.W. Bryant was in charge of funeral arrangements.

BEARD, Lucinda HAMBY - (from The Rogers Democrat) Mrs. J.M. Beard died Monday afternoon at the home of her daughter, Mrs. E.T. Pinkston, on South Fourth street, at the age of 80 years, three months and 15 days. She had been in poor health for a number of years. Funeral services were held yesterday at the family burying ground at Goad Springs cemetery, west of Lowell, and were conducted by Elder Floyd Tillman of the Baptist church at Sonora. Although Lucinda Hamby was born in Tennessee all but a year or two of her life was spent in Northwest Arkansas, her parents coming to this section in the late '40s and locating in Carroll county. In 1852 the family moved to a farm west of Lowell and the rest of her life was spent within ten miles of that spot. On March 20, 1870 she married J.M. Beard, who survives her, and to them were born six children, all of whom are living. They are Dr. J.H. Beard of Westville, Okla.; Dr. D.A. Beard of Tulsa; Mrs. E.T. Pinkston of Rogers; Mrs. Lee Henry of Joplin; Jasper, who lives west of Lowell, and the youngest son, Roy, who is in the state hospital. All of the children were here save Roy. Mrs. Beard came of a long lived family, for of the nine children, three have died in the last 16 months - all well advanced in years. She is survived by four sisters, Mrs. Amanda M. Giles of Jennings, Okla.; Mrs. J.H. Beard, west of Lowell; and Misses Sarah and Clara Hamby of Goodman, Mo.; also by two brothers, J.N. Hamby of Lowell and J.M. Hamby of Arkansas City, Kansas.
