Calico Rock Progress Oct 12, 1928:
Road Workman Killed by Overturned Truck
Green Hamby is Victim of Accident at Sylamore.

Green Hamby aged about 30, of the vicinity of Culp, Baxter County, was killed almost instantly on Friday afternoon of last week, when a heavy truck which he was driving, overturned on him while he was employed on the new highway a short distance out of Sylamore.

Hamby was engaged at hauling dirt on the Mississippi-Arkansas Construction Company's contract, driving a truck belonging to B. F. Brooks, who has the road contract south out of Calico Rock and who recently released part of his equipment for work at Sylamore with the Mississippi-Arkansas Co. He had driven to the brink of the high dump with a load of dirt and rock. Workmen who were dumping the dirt ordered him to back closer to the edge of the dump, it is said which he did. The bed of the truck was released for dumping, but the catch on the spill gate failed to release the load, the heavy load on the rear causing the truck to turn completely over backward. The driver was trapped underneath, dying before he could be released. His head and body were badly mangled.

The body was brought to Calico Rock late in the day, an undertaker arriving that night to prepare it for burial. The body was taken to his home near Culp, five miles west of here Saturday, burial taking place at Table Rock Cemetery Sunday.

Deceased is survived by his mother, Mrs Martha Dixon and two brothers.

The young man was reared in the Culp vicinity and was known to a great many at this place. He was a splendid young man, honest and industrious and well spoken of by those who knew him. He was a World War Veteran with enviable record.
