BUTLER, J. Van - It is with sad heart that we chronicle the death of one of our esteemed friends - J. Van Butler, one of the editors of the Siloam Springs Herald and for a long time editor of the Locomotive of Siloam Springs. Always of a bright and cheerful nature, few ills of life ever caused the shadows or the cares and vexations of business life to mar his cheerfulness and some of the brightest editorial and comical narratives of Arkansas journalism were found in his paper. Brother Butler was comparatively a young man, being only 29 years and 4 months old when the inevitable summons came. For several years he heroically combatted with consumption yet with all his heroism and the best medical skill he had at last to yield to death, the unconquerable enemy of our lives, and on Monday, May 27th, 1895 he died, leaving a devoted wife and scores of warm true friends to mourn his early demise. On Tuesday, May 28 funeral services were held at the Christian church in Siloam Springs after which the remains were interred in Fairmount Cemetery under the auspices of the Knights of Pythias to which order he belonged. Last year Mr. Butler sold a half interest in his paper, the Herald, to Mr. J.P. Brown of Bertrand, Nebraska and just before his death he sold the remaining interest to Brother Brown who will continue to print the Herald at Siloam. Deceased was a brother to our friend, H.M. Butler, of the Rogers Democrat.

Bro. H.M. Butler of the Rogers Democrat passed through town Monday enroute to Siloam to attend the funeral of his brother, J. Van Butler, who died of consumption early Monday morning. The deceased was an able newspaper man and was connected for a number of years with the Siloam Herald. We extend our sympathy to the bereaved relatives and friends.
