March 12, 1850 - November 26, 1909
*Obituary
Benton County Democrat
Thursday, December 9, 1909
MURRAY, John Armstrong - John Armstrong Murray was born in Jonesboro, Tennessee March 12, 1850 and his early life was spent near that place. He was educated at Washington College near Jonesboro and graduated from that institution at an early age. He was married at the age of twenty to Miss Martha Bacon and to them were born six children, five of whom are now living. In 1874 he removed from East Tennessee to Benton county, Arkansas and settled in the Vaughn neighborhood, nine miles southwest of Bentonville and remained there until his death. He was married to Mrs. A.M. Derreberry in 1884 and four children, all of whom are living, blessed this union. Mr. Murray devoted the early part of his life to teaching and after twenty years rest from this work, again took it up three years ago, teaching the school in his home district. At the time of his death he was teaching the Edgewood School near Centerton. At the age of seventeen he united with the Baptist church. He took much interest in his church and was a faithful attendant upon the services there. The work which brought Mr. Murray into largest touch with the citizens of Benton county was his services to the county as surveyor for twelve years. So accurate was he in this work that when the county line between Benton and Washington counties was to be resurveyed he was selected as the representative of Benton county. Col. W.H. [Coin} Harvey employed Mr. Murray to lay out the grounds at Monte Ne, which he did to the satisfaction of Col. Harvey and to the delight of all who visit that place. As a citizen, a Christian, a neighbor and especially as an advocate of education, Mr. Murray will be greatly missed in the community in which he has lived for thirty-five years. After a short illness with pneumonia he was called to his reward November 26, 1909. Rev. Mr. Pitman, his pastor, conducted the funeral services in the Hazel Glen church near his home and the interment was at Barron's Cemetery.
