Dr. Atkinson Dies at Age 69 In Bentonville

BENTONVILLE, Ark. - Dr. Richard Matson Atkinson, Jr., 69 years old, long-time Bentonville physician, died Monday evening in Bates Memorial Hospital after a five-week illness.

A native of Bentonville, Dr. Atkinson was graduated from Cincinnati, Ohio Medical college and was associated for many years with the late Dr. C.E. Hurley. Dr. Atkinson was chief of staff at Bates Memorial Hospital, city health officer, and served for 30 years as county health officer. He was responsible for the program that started Bates Memorial hospital and for subsequent expansions of the hospital.

He was a member of the International College of Surgeons, the Benton County Medical Society, the State Medical Society and the American Medical Association. He was a charter member of Bentonville Rotary Club, a Master Mason and a member of the Bentonville Methodist church.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Violet McAllister Atkinson, and a foster daughter, Mrs. Frank Deshong, Bakersfield, Calif.

Services will be at 10:30 o'clock Friday morning in First Methodist church. The Rev. Thurston Masters and the Rev. Al Butler will officiate. A masonic graveside service will be held at the Bentonville cemetery. Burial will be under direction of Callison-McKinney funeral home.
