GAINES, Adelbert M. - Dr. Adelbert M. Gaines, one of the best known physicians in Benton County, died at his home in Pea Ridge last Friday, following a stroke of paralysis from which he never recovered. He was 66 years of age. Besides a wife he leaves six children, all of whom were present at the funeral excepting Mrs. Yates, living near Bella Vista, who was too ill to come. A brother from Chickasha, Okla. and another from Dallas, Texas were also present at the funeral, held Saturday afternoon. Dr. Gaines has been a practicing physician here for over 20 years and was widely known and loved throughout this section. He formerly practiced at Maysville before coming to Pea Ridge. A strange adventure was experienced by the doctor while living in Maysville. One night shortly after the Peoples Bank here in Bentonville was robbed, in 1893, masked men rode up to his house, blindfolded the doctor and took him away - how far the doctor never knew. After what seemed to be hours the strangers stopped in the woods, uncovered his eyes and ordered him to look after a wounded man. After dressing his wounds, Dr. Gaines was blindfolded, put on a horse and taken home. The strangers left the doctor a well filled purse for his night's work and departed. Who they were the doctor never found out but he always believed that they were the men who had robbed the bank in Bentonville.
