BYLER, Robert - (from Walnut Hill} Providence school opened last Monday week with a goodly enrollment. Everything moved along nicely as it always does when Dugan Snoderly is behind it. Wednesday noon the larger boys played ball while smaller ones were playing dare base. A stray ball flew among the little boys, hitting Robert Byler, or "Tompy" as he was called, in the side of the head. He threw the ball back to the boys and said "that hurt," walked on to his base and made an attempt to go to the farther base when he fell to the ground and was never able to speak again. His folks were called as well as Dr. Guy Hodges of Garfield. All was done for him that was possible but he died before 4 o'clock. The doctor said the ball did not cause death, but hemorrhage of the brain. Little Tompy was born in August 1900 and died July 15, 1914. He was laid to rest in the Walnut Hill cemetery, Eld. John Taylor conducting the service. It was a terrible shock to the community, especially to the family; leaving home well, never to return. His brother, Jack, had made a business trip in the west end of the county and was in Rogers awaiting the train home and was met at Garfield with the sad news. A message was sent to his sister, Mrs. Thomas Bybee, who lives near Pittsburg, Kansas and she arrived in time for the funeral. The broken hearted family has the sympathy of the entire community. The school and teacher are very much grieved for all loved Tompy.
