FAIRVIEW CEMETERY *

Fairview Cemetery
Baxter County,
Arkansas

A view of the center of the Fairview Cemetery from the west (back) side of the cemetery. This view shows many of the older graves.

The Fairview Cemetery is located about midway between the Buford and Shady Grove communities on Baxter County road number 633 about an 1/8 of a mile north of the intersection of road number 633 and Baxter County road number 57.
Apparently the present Fairview Cemetery was first used in the early to mid 1870's; however various stories linked together make it appear that there had once been another Fairview Cemetery in the same vicinity.
Mr. Lueck, a retired telephone company employee, had used thick copper wires in his career with the telephone company to locate water lines and buried electrical and phone lines. On a mound were narcissuses were blooming the wires crossed a number of times indicating that the soil had been disturbed; maybe from burials.
The earliest marked grave is that of Joel Z. Savage; husband of Clarrissa E. Savage; died September 25, 1875; age 21 years, seven months, 3 days. There are 35 marked graves with death dates prior to the turn of the century. With the limited data available, it would appear that the current Fairview Cemetery was started about 1874 or 1875. Many of the older grave are marked with limestone rocks. A large number of those rocks have names or initials carved into them, and a few even have dates. The carvings on the rocks are almost impossible to read. At the end of December 20011 there were 380 marked graves in the cemetery with around 275 more marked by limestone rocks or other means. There are obviously numerous other graves that have been lost through the years. In addition to the 380 marked graves, there are markers reserving space for nine people and two markers reserving a place for a spouse who was buried elsewhere.
