Gilbert Ernest “Pappy” Blevins, son of the late Gilbert Eugene and Mary Ellen Campbell Blevins, was born November 21, 1913 in Violet Hill. He died January 4, 1996 in Salem. He was 82.

Mr. Blevins was united in marriage to Susan Ella “Mammy” Standerford on October 5, 1932 in Spring Hill and to this union four children were born. He was owner and operator of a service station and a member of the Mason’s and Fairview Baptist Church in Violet Hill.

Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Gerald Blevins of Oxford; three daughters; Anniece Reed of Oxford; Patsy Campbell of Melbourne; and Phillis McCurley of Oxford; one sister Vesta Williams of Cabot; one brother, Gene Blevins of Oxford; six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and three sisters.

Services were held January 7, 1996 at the Howard Chapel in Melbourne with Brother Duane Flood officiating.

Pallbearers were David Sherrell, Dale Martin, Russell Sherrell, Randy Sherrell, Gordon Owens, and James Wood. Honorary pallbearers were Larry Owens, David Owens, Darrel Sherrell, Jack McCollum, Johnny Hatfield and Cliff Castor.

Interment was at the Oxford Cemetery in Oxford under the direction of Howard Funeral Home in Melbourne.
