Rehobeth Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery
Union County,
Arkansas

June 17, 1858 - Dec 29, 1935

Moulton J. Goodwin, aged 77, well known South Arkansas pioneer citizen, died at his home in El Dorado Sunday night. He had many friends here and in Ouachita county. Funeral services were held today at El Dorado with burial in Reheboth cemetery. Honorary pallbearers included A. L. Morgan, A. Felsenthal, M. G. Lide and G. S. Rumph, of Camden. Mr. Goodwin was the last of nine prominent Union countians, sons of Robert Goodwin and Nancy Thomas Foster Goodwin, who came from Selma, Ala., in 1841 to homestead a plantation on the Smackover highway, five miles north of what is now the city of El Dorado. The sixth of these sons, Mr. Goodwin was born June 17, 1858, on the plantation, now the home of his nephew, W. W. Goodwin. On August 16, 1883, Mr. Goodwin was married to Miss Sallie Naomi Saxon, at the Saxon home near Smackover. He and Mrs. Goodwin, who survives him celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary with a big reception in August, 1933. On that occasion Mr. Goodwin received in the black broadcloth frock coat in which he had been married a half century before. The early part of their married life was spent at Newport Landing, Union county, where Mr. Goodwin was engaged in the mercantile business. With the decline of river traffic they moved near Smackover and resided there until they returned to El Dorado to live shortly after the discovery of oil. A small boy during the Civil War and trying days of reconstruction, Mr. Goodwin was almost an authority on early Union county history. His cheerful reminiscences were always interesting to his listeners. (Camden Times - January 2, 1936)
