Cora MASSEY

Washington (African American) Cemetery
Sebastian County,
Arkansas

June 22, 1922 - December 19, 2010

Cora Massey, 88, of Fort Smith passed away in a Fort Smith hospital Dec. 19, 2010.
Cora was born June 22, 1922, in Fort Smith to the late John Perry Massey and Emma (Kyer) Massey.

She worked hard all of her adult life to support herself and her daughter while she was growing up. Cora worked cleaning homes and hotels while striving to get ahead. Through working various jobs, she came to know that she was interested in caring for people in the medical field. And, soon caring for the sick and elderly in a nursing home, Oaks Lodge (now Legacy Health & Rehab) for 10 years, it became her passion. But Cora still wanted to do more. She went on to get her high school diploma at the age of 58 so she could go from being a nurse's aide to a certified nurse assistant. Once she reached her goal of CNA at Sparks Regional Medical Center, she wanted to become an LPN. Cora however, did not reach that one goal of many before she retired after 12 years of faithful, devoted service to the patients of Sparks Hospital.

Cora was a member of Ninth Street Missionary Baptist Church. She loved the Lord and taught her family that He was the way to everlasting life.

She dabbled in quilting, crochet and gardening. She loved beautiful plants and flowers. Cora could cook a big meal like she was at a fast food restaurant. And, when not busy doing something, she loved her soaps.

Cora is survived by her daughter, Tabitha M. West, and Tabitha's children, Diana, Shelia, Danny and James West Jr., all of Fort Smith, and three beautiful great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind a number of beloved nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Nathan, George and Leroy Massey; and two sisters, Virginia (Lil'Sis) Massey and Eva Davis.

Graveside service for Cora was 11 a.m. Wednesday at Washington Cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Rowell-Parish Mortuary.
