MAYES, W.Z. — The work of the destroyer was again made manifest in the community by the death of Mr. W.E.(sic) Mayes, known to everybody as "Zebe" Mayes, which occurred at his home near the city on the afternoon of the 7th inst. The announ cement of his death was a great surprise as it was not generally known that he was sick, and created universal sorrow throughout the community. It appears that he was unwell several weeks ago but he appeared to have almost recovered. Sunday night about 8 o'clock when he was out in the yard Mrs. Mayes heard him cry out and on going to him found that he was entirely helpless and unconscious. She had to await the return of some one from church to summon medical aid and get help to carry him into the house. He regained partial consciousness but his mind was flighty at intervals. He continued without any perceptible change until Tuesday afternoon when he grew worse rapidly and died in a short time. The funeral services, conducted by Rev. Dr. Manard of the Baptist church were held at the family residence at 2 p.m. yesterday, there being a large attendance of our citizens, after which the solemn procession marched to the Evergreen Cemetery where his remains were buried. Mr. Mayes was born in Granger County, Tenn. in 1835 and was 53 years old. He moved with his father Uncle Johnny Mayes to Washington county, in 1843 and here he grew up to manhood and has ever lived an upright honorable life. He joined the Missionary Baptist church when he was 15 years of age and always remained steadfast in the faith. He was a good man and one of our very best citizens and to his bereft widow and grief stricken children the Democrat extends sincere condolence.
