Former Alaska resident John Clifford "Arkie" Franklin, 77, of Jamestown, Tenn., died Nov. 17, 2003, at Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge, Tenn. A memorial service was Nov. 23 at Pleasant View Church of the Nazarene.

Mr. Franklin was born Feb. 5, 1926, in Rocky Ford, Colo., to James Walter Franklin and Grace Clodfelter Franklin. He was a member of Pleasant View Church of the Nazarene in Allardt, Tenn. During his career he worked for Loffland, Brinkerhoff, GSL Oilfield Services, VRCA Environment Services and Arco. He was a driller on the discovery well. He moved to Alaska before it become a state and stayed until 1988, when he retired from Arco.

Mr. Franklin is survived by his wife of 35 years, Barbara of Jamestown, Tenn.; sons, Douglas of Leesburg, Fla., Bradley of Tavares, Fla.; daughters, Belinda "Candy" Ervin and Pamela Hemphill, both of Nikiski; stepson, Bobby Henson of Peters Creek; stepdaughters, Carole Cromwell of Burrville, Tenn., and Mary Suter of Chugiak; brother, Charles Vincent of Arkansas; sisters, Madelin Cradduck of Texas and Gladys Mankins of Arkansas; 10 grandchildren, 16 step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Mr. Franklin was preceded in death by his sister Hellen Montgomery. Mr. Franklin donated his body as an anatomical gift to the University of Tennessee at Memphis.
