Calvin PHELPS

Fairview Cemetery
Crawford County,
Arkansas

August 14, 1808 - March 29, 1870

Calvin Phelps died suddenly at his home on the 29th day of March, 1870 at the age of 63. Husband of Almira Davis Phelps.

He was a native of the state of Maine. He came to Arkansas more than thirty years ago with the late Daniel Wilson, Isaac B. Austin and others, and has been a resident of Van Buren or its immediate neighborhood ever since.

He was a worthy and good man, quiet and law abiding, and habitually desired to be at peace with the world. He had no enemies, for he meddled with nobodies business and never gave occasion for the enmity of anyone. He was honest and sincere in his opinions and his convictions of right when once fixed were invulnerable.

He was an unwavering believer in the truths of Christianity and lived up to his profession. A ruling elder in the Presbyterian Church, he was a good type of New England Deacon.
He was scrupulously honest in his dealings with man, and although he was unambitious and unpretentious the influence of his example, it is believed, will have a happy effect in the community which he lived and was best known.

Calvin Phelps belonged to a numerous and widely extended family, some to whom have been distinguished at the Bar, on the Bench and in Halls of legislation. The Honorable Mr. Phelps member of Congress from Maryland and the Hon. John S. Phelps of Missouri are of this family. Less distinguished he may have been than some of his name, he has surpassed by none of them in the enabling characteristics of an honest man and devoted Christian.
