Ernest A. “Ernie” Smith, a caring husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, went home to rest with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Saturday, June 12, 2021. Ernie was born to the late Warren A. Smith and Vera Mae (Treece) Smith on November 15, 1932, in Clinton, Arkansas. He married the love of his life and best friend, Freda “Jean” McMullan in 1953. The two had three children: Patty, David, Jackie. Ernie worked in construction and traveled all over The United States living in 38 of the states. He knew his calling from the Lord was to lead people to Christ. Ernie dedicated his life to serving the Lord and being a prayer warrior. He retired from CDI Construction in Little Rock. The simplest pleasures in life brought him great joy that included gardening, refinishing furniture, woodwork, and fishing. Ernie was the Chaplain at Stewart Martin Equipment. He loved sharing his passion and love for the Lord with everyone. His life was a living example of one of his favorite Bible verses, Ephesians 2:8- “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God,”
Ernie is survived by his beautiful wife, Jean Smith; daughters and their spouses, Patty Berley and Ken; Jackie Newton and Joey; son and spouse, David Smith and Nancy; grandchildren and their spouses, Stephanie Calkins and Brad, Michael Newton and Heather, Jonathan Newton and Amber, Anna Carpenter and Gavin, and Warren Smith and Quinlyn; great grandchildren, Haley Berley, Paige Newton, Andrew Newton, Noah Newton, Nathan Newton, Emmery Newton, Franko Newton, and Eva Newton; siblings and their spouses, Doris Middleton and Doyle, Roy Smith and Judy; along with many nieces, nephews, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Warren and Vera Smith, Elbert and Cena McMullan; siblings, Ermin Smith, Vivian Gillam, and Thurman Smith.
A funeral service will be held 11:00AM, Friday, June 18, 2021, at the Calvary Baptist Church with Pastor Bill Bowen and Pastor Richard Manning officiating. Pallbearers will be Michael Newton, Jonathan Newton, Warren Smith, Brad Calkins, Gavin Carpenter, and Bryan Austin. Interment will be held Monday, June 21, 2021, in Alexander, Arkansas at the Pinecrest Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family ask that donations be made to the Calvary Baptist Children’s Ministry, Happy Hands Education Center of Tulsa, or Clarehouse Hospice in Tulsa.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the McClendon-Winters Funeral Home of Okmulgee.
