A Funeral Service for Ernest James Confer of Mountain Home, Arkansas, will be 1:00 pm, Friday, December 8, 2017, at Kirby & Family Funeral Home Chapel, with Heather Marsalis, Life Celebrant officiating. Visitation will be Friday, December 8, 2017, from 12:00 pm until service time, at Kirby & Family Funeral Home Chapel.
Ernest passed away December 5, 2017, in Mountain Home, Arkansas at the age of 75. He was born in Owosso, Michigan on the 4th of July, 1942, son of La Voin Confer and Hazel Snyder Confer. He spent his entire life in the military and retired from the Army as a Lt. Colonel in 1996. His military career included three tours to Vietnam as a Green Beret with Special Forces. In 1981, Ernest moved out west and married Madelyn Anderson on August 12, 1982, in Golden, Colorado where they shared a passion for downhill skiing in the Rocky mountains. He moved to Arkansas after spending a couple years in Colorado where he began working at Camp Robinson located in North Little Rock, Arkansas as Operations and Training Supervisor for a five state area and then retired in 2002. Ernest enjoyed outdoor activities such as fishing, camping, hiking, ATV riding, rockhounding, etc. While working at Camp Robinson, Ernest and his wife developed an interest in fossils and minerals and joined their first Geology Society located in Little Rock, AR. so that they would be able to learn more about the wonderful hobby of collecting nature's treasures. Soon they became mineral and fossil dealers and began spending the winters out west collecting specimens and attending mineral shows in areas of NM., CA., WY., and AZ.
Ernest is survived by his wife, Madelyn K Anderson of AR; son, James (Lady) Confer of Radcliff, KY; daughter, Claudia (Rob) Major of Vassar, MI; and six grandchildren, Christopher, David, Raymond, Marina, Robert Jr., and Brandon.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Jacqueline Confer.
Burial will be in the Kirby's Tucker Memorial Cemetery, Mountain Home, Arkansas, with Christopher Confer, Robert Major, Jr., Brandon Major, and Rob Major as pallbearers. Military Honors will be provided by the United States Army Honor Guard.
Memorials may be made to the Humane Society or Hospice of the Ozarks Hospice House.
Arrangements are by Kirby and Family Funeral and Cremation Services.
