William Berryman, 79, Mississippi County Sheriff for 26 years, died Saturday, March 22, 1975, at Chickasawba Hospital in Blytheville. He retired from office in 1972, ending a law enforcement career which began in 1939 with the Blytheville Police Department.

He had the distinction of being appointed to the Arkansas State Police Commission on March 7, 1949 by Arkansas Governor Sidney McMath. He served on the Commission until 1950. Berryman also was among the first Arkansas sheriffs to attend the FBI National Academy. Late in his career, he received an award of merit from the U.S. Secret Service for "generous and continuing assistance." He was also inducted into the Arkansas Sheriffs' Association Hall of Fame.

Berryman was born near Jonesboro, grew up in Trumann, and lived for over 40 years in Blytheville. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Blytheville, a veteran of World War I, a member of the American Legion, and was a Mason.

Berryman is survived by his daughter, Mrs. Crandall Kinningham of Blytheville.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. on March 25th at First Baptist Church with the Reverend Alvis Carpenter and the Reverend William P. Kirkindall officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery under the direction of Cobb Funeral Home.

In memory of Mr. Berryman, all Mississippi County Offices will be closed tomorrow from 10:15 a.m. until 11:15 a.m., County Judge A.A. "Shug" Banks said this morning.
