John Samuel Medley was born in 1848 in Parke County, IN, the son of Phillip and Rachel Barnes Medley. There were other boys in this family Robert, L.T. and E.A. John came to Sharp Co., AR. He married the widow of Isaac Edward Sharp, Nancy Jane Luce Sharp. Isaac was a very well to do man and he left his wife, four young children, the mills, and other businesses. John came to work for Nancy Luce Sharp as foreman of the mills. She lived for only six months after their marriage. John took over all the holdings and finished raising the four sharp children. He was married again to Lillie B. Greene and they had three daughters. When he died 04 Feb 1904 his wife and daughter sold all the interest in Arkansas and moved back east. He was buried very near Isaac Sharp and Nancy Luce Sharp Medley in the Sharp Cemetery. This cemetery is now known as the Evening Shade-Sharp Cemetery.
