SANDERS MCLEHANEY, ANNIE - Baxter County, Arkansas | ANNIE SANDERS MCLEHANEY - Arkansas Gravestone Photos

Annie SANDERS MCLEHANEY

Burnt School House Cemetery
Baxter County,
Arkansas

Annie Sanders McLehaney Merrell
Married(1) Henry McLehaney
Married(2) A. Jackson "Jack" Merrell
Daughter of William & Mary E. Sanders
Birth & Death Dates On Gravestone: 1877--1910

There are several misleading pieces of information on the tombstone. Annie Sanders had first been married to Henry McLehaney in Missouri and they divorced after having at least three children. Then the Baxter County Marriage License Record shows that A. J. Merrill, age 49, married Mrs. Annie McLehaney, age 30, on September 23, 1906. Then there is a brief item in the April 2, 1909, issue of the Baxter Bulletin that states: "The wife of Uncle Jack Merrell of Advance died on last Monday evening. Mrs. Merrell was 34 years old and leaves besides her bereaved husband a family of little children."
Those various items make it appear that her surname was Merrell at the time of her death, and that the birthdate was probably 1875 or 1876, while the death date was March 29, 1909. The tombstone is apparently a much more recent type tombstone than would have been used in 1909, so it was probably purchased by her McLehaney children at a much later date and they probably chose to record her name to match theirs.
