James Winchester Burke, 82, died Thursday, September 30, in his home. He was a resident of Marianna and a retired mechanic. He also was a member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church and a army veteran of WWII. Mr. Burke worked as a mechanic at Ford Motor Company and was in the Marianna National Guard before joining the U.S. Army, during World War II. He served in the 206 Coast Artillery Force in Alaska on the Aleutian Islands as an auto mechanic and Captain's Sr. Chauffeur. Returning from the Army, he was employed as a welder and mechanic for Westerfield Chevrolet Company and then for Ross Hayes Grain Elevator Company and farmed with his brother, the late Robert Burke. He retired from farming to travel with his wife, visiting family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Rosa May Crosland Burke; one daughter, Rosemary Burke Carroll of Tulsa, OK; one son, James C. Burke, Jr. of Heber Springs; a sister, Malvania Ellen Thompson of Kalleman, TX; three brothers, Connie Cornelius Burke of St. Louis, Samuel Moody Burke of Ontonia, Alabama and Millard John Burke of Marianna; and two grandchildren. Funeral services were held Monday, October 4, at 10 a.m., at St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Marianna with Rev. Tom Newman officiating. Burial followed at LaGrange Cemetery. Pallbearers were Wayne Smith, Vince DeSalvo, Tom Gist, Steve Higginbothom, David Baily and Billy Pounds. Arrangements were handled by Roller-Citizens Funeral Home.
