Reverend Obie Lee Harris went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, May 22, 2015 at Crest Park in Forrest City, Arkansas, where he resided the last eleven years of his life. Obie is survived by his wife—Geraldine Richardson of Palestine, Arkansas; three daughters all of whom reside in Battle Creek, Michigan—Gail Dreams, Sheila (Reginald) White, and Sheryl Gordon; two grandsons—Anthony White of New Orleans, Louisiana and Trayon Hamilton of Battle Creek, Michigan; and two great granddaughters—Adliegh and Amya; as well as a special niece and nephew—Venola and Jody Baker. He also leaves behind a host of relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his mother—Daisy Harris.

Obie Lee Harris was born May 27,1922 in Forrest City, Arkansas to Daisy Harris. He was her only child. He received his formal education in the Bonair Community. On February 27, 1944, Obie was joined in holy matrimony with Miss Geraldine Richardson. He met his future bride while attending her father’s church. During the early years of their marriage, Obie made his living farming in Lee County until 1947. At that time, the couple relocated north to Battle Creek, Michigan, where they remained for the next fifty years. Obie was an employee at Kellogg’s for many years and then went to Clark Equipment, where he retired after thirty-one years.

Obie was also an ordained minister for fifty years. Although he never pastored his own church, he was always involved in ministering through a variety of several gospel groups. The Traveling Stars was one of the many groups, and they traveled to many cities to minister to people. For thirty -six years he loved pastoring to nursing home residents in Michigan. Even while at Crest Park, his love for the Lord continued through his ministry to residents and guests. Obie’s hands were anointed in music. Although he never received formal training, Obie could play a variety of instruments such as the organ, piano, guitar, keyboard, and harmonica. Obie’s anointing went beyond musical instruments. His various abilities included his skills as a carpenter, electrician, plumber, and mechanic, as well as furniture maker. Obie enjoyed spending time with his children talking with them about the Lord and how important it was to have a relationship with Him. He also reminded them the value of education. Obie spent many hours having jam sessions with his daughters. He loved gardening and giving away fresh vegetables to neighbors and anyone in need. No fonder memories did he have than listening to his daughters and preaching the word.
