Mildred Pace Presher (1920 - 2003)

Charles “Charlie” Henry Presher Sr., 91, passed quietly September 19, 2014 as a result of a stroke.

Charles was an example of human kindness, generosity and referred to as a “ray of sunshine.” Born May 8, 1923, in Anderson, South Carolina attended Clemson A&M in South Carolina where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, and a Masters degree in psychology from the University of South Carolina.

It was here he met and married Mildred “Mimi” Pace a professor at Anderson College. The couple lived in Columbia, SC until 1960 then moved to Little Rock. Here he worked as a phycologist for the Arkansas State Hospital, Goodwill Industries and other state facilities throughout Arkansas.

During WWII, Charles served in Europe ranked TEC 5, relaying radio transmissions for the army from behind enemy lines. He also served with occupation forces in Japan. Charlie and Mimi devoted themselves as house parents for 15 years to over 40 college students from all over the world, who came to study English at UALR. Many considered them their “American grandparents” and maintain close contact to this day.

The couple considered this time as one of the happiest periods of their lives.

Beginning in 2008, Charles volunteered over 2,000 hours to St. Vincent Hospital visiting patients. He said the greatest joy he received in visiting was seeing a depressed patient’s face light up when he gave them a stuffed animal and words of encouragement. He not only left a lasting impact on patients but the staff as well. “Mr. Charles” received the Joan B. Wilson Hospitality Memorial Award and Volunteer of the Year Award. Charlie attended Trinity United Methodist Church for four decades and enjoyed ballroom dancing, playing golf, telling jokes, the horse races and cards. But most of all, he loved telling jokes. Dad rejoiced in God’s love and the life he was given.

Charles is preceded in death by his wife, Mildred, his bride of 55 years.

He is survived by his brothers Johnny Ray and Larry Presher; his children Chuck Presher (Little Rock), Lyn Crandall (Sun Valley, ID), Elizabeth Pope (Dallas), Bill Presher (Norfolk, VA); his beloved companion Frances Deleuil.

Memorial services will be held Friday, October 3, 2014 promptly at 1:00pm at The Arkansas State Veterans Cemetery, 1501 West Maryland Ave. in N.L.R.
