February 11, 1923 - October 24, 1944
Mayor and Mrs. Girvis Halton of Stephens, have received a letter from Captain Edwin C. Clarke of the U. S. Marine Corps advising them that their son "killed in the war against Japan, has been positively identified. He was killed in an air attack but his body was not found for some time. This is the first positive identification notice received by the Haltoms since the Marine Corps notified them of his death in action. The letter follows: "A report has just been received the the remains of your son, First Lieutenant Girvis Haltom, Jr., U. S. Marine Corps Reserve, have been recovered and positively identified. His remains now rest in the American Military Cemetery established on Yap Island. The program for the reparation of remains of our overseas dead is proceeding according to plan. At the proper time you will be furnished with full particulars and an application form upon which to state the disposition you desire of you son's remains." (Camden News - June 25, 1947)
