Earl died off the Korean coast. He was an Aviation Electronics Man Third Class Ruddell was the radarman of a AD-4NL Skyraider night fighter with Composite Squadron 35 aboard the carrier USS PRINCETON (CV-37). On June 8, 1952, while returning from combat mission, the aircraft crashed into the sea, killing him and the pilot. For his leadership and valor, Aviation Electronics Man Third Class Ruddell was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Purple Heart, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
