John F. Mackey was born in Lycoming county, Penn. Oct. 10, 1845. His parents moved to Illinois when he was a small boy where he grew to manhood. He was married to Miss Matilda Nelson at Macomb, III. Nov. 22, 1866. Soon after his marriage he became a member of the United Brethren Church, remaining a member of that denomination until he moved to Benton county, Ark. in 1900. There being no church of that denomination he transferred his membership to the Presbyterian Church at Vaughn, Ark., retaining his membership at that place until his death on Jan. 22, 1920 due to neuralgia of the heart following the third paralytic stroke. In 1875 they moved from Ill. to Nebraska where they lived until 1894, moving from there to Oklahoma and thence to Benton county. He enlisted and became a private in Co. C, 11th Reg., Ill. Cay., remaining a member of the same until the close of the Civil War. His first connection with the postal service occurred when he was appointed postmaster at Armada, Nebr. during the 80's which position he retained for a number of years. Later he was connected with the post office at Watertown, Nebr. which position he held until 1894. He was next appointed postmaster at Centerton about the year 1907, remaining in the same service here for several years. He leaves to mourn his departure a wife and three children, Mrs. Matilda Mackey of Gravette, Mrs. J.O. Stringham of Caverna, Mo., W.F. Mackey of Cleveland, Ohio and Mrs. F.B. Lewis of Gravette, besides a host of friends. - By a Friend.
